Film/image analysis DOTD (2004) clip 2

Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Michael vs. quick zombies!

In this scene it shows Michael (male hero) shooting at the quick zombies, already very different to the slow moving ones in the original DOTD (1979). It shows more graphic scenes such as this, and the faster montages indicate the rise of modern “action horrors” happening. Horror is harsher now with no Hays Code but not necessarily scarier. But also the audience needs more shock because we get used to it due to desensitisation. In the original it is more prolonged, in the remake it is a lot more gore/body horror. Janet Staiger (main critic behind “Audience Studies”) says different audience members watch films in different ways plus she also acknowledged that the audience’s context is an important part of how they’ll respond for instance how horrors have changed over the years because audiences have, audience nowadays need more to shock us and so horror movies have to be quicker and more violent. Other than DOTD (2004) The hills have eyes (2006) is a great example of the quicker editing and more violent plus The hills have eyes (2006) is also another remake from the 1970’s.
