Fim/image anaylsis DOTD (2004) clip 3

Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Lift Break Scene!

This scene featuring most of the characters from Dawn of the Dead (2004) shows the power of montage. This scene relies on collision cutting for example in the lift is the slow part in contrast to the quick sequence of shots when they are running away from the quick moving zombies. The music in the lift is happy music which is contrapuntal music given the dangerous situation they’re in. it also adds to the collision cutting, as the music before has been very dramatic. In general, the editing in DOTD (2004) uses more shots and fast sequences of shots creating excitement/ confusion, which speeds up your heart and makes it unsettling. I believe this shot showing all of them in the lift also gives you a good indication of the characters and representations they play in the film. For example on the left, Monica, who is the female victim with her mysterious and seductive blond her. Plus the final girl which is Ana screen centre of the pack showing she’s a tough survivor and the centre of attention.
