Film/Image analysis Psycho (1960) clip 1

Norman Birds Image

In this shot from Psycho (1960) it shows low key lighting with the creepy, shadowy lighting of the stuffed owl in the background. The mise-en-scene indicates a creepy location from the Norman’s room. This also connotes the character of Norman Bates as a psycho killer with the sinister movements he makes and how he slurs his words because he’s in the same room as the female victim (Marion). This visually shows he’s uncomfortable because he is in front of an attractive female. Anthony Perkins purposely acts this scene as if he’s acting the two sides of his Norman’s personality which one side he’s feelings of love towards Marion and the other of sexism towards women which is his mother’s personality. This shows Norman’s clearly outside the Cultural Dominant Ideologies (CDI), and this is emphasised later in the film when he is shown as a transvestite. The owl in the background is a bird of prey…just like Norman plus Marion’s surname “Crane” is a “bird” he’s about to kill.
